While sitting in the waiting room at my son's pediatrician appointment last week, I came across an article titled, 10 types of content writers and when to use them.
I wrote something similar in March that posed seven questions you should ask yourself before hiring a writer. This latest one was a great read, too, because while small-business owners should partner with a professional writer, not all are created equal.
In other words, you need to pick a content writer who is a good fit for your project(s).
Without spoiling all the details of that article, because I do think you should read it when you have the chance, it breaks all content writers down into 10 specialty groups.
1. Brand Journalist
2. SEO Copywriter/Generalist
3. Digital/UX Writer
4. Lead Generation Writer
5. Subject Matter Expert
6. Influencer
7. Social Media Writer
8. Advertising Copywriter
9. Technical Writer
10. Grant Writer
Adapting content to your brand's personality and message
Personally, I fall into the brand journalist category. Per the author, this is someone who likely has a background in newspapers and magazines (which I do) and is a pro at seeking out the story, constructing narratives, and finding the human interest element in your brand's vision and mission.
Brand journalists are great at blogs, newsletters, long-form pieces, content that highlights a company's history, etc. This is a big piece to what I do at Edit This®, and it goes a long way in giving your business a clear and authentic voice to communicate with clients. But I also think there is room for overlap, and the author says that's not unusual.
For example, I am also a resource in SEO copywriting, social media writing, stepping in as a subject matter expert, and writing advertising copy. If you can find a content writer who can learn your company's unique content writing needs, then your choice is made.
