9 Holiday Gifts for the Writer in Your Life, Including Write Like You Mean It

Christmas is almost here. And if you're like me, you're probably still trying to figure out what to buy for friends, family, and perhaps that loveable writer in your life.

Here are 9 holiday gifts for the writer in your family. And yes, this list starts with my new book!

1. New book: Write Like You Mean It

This book is useful to first-time writers, veteran writers, nonfiction writers, fiction writers, freelance writers, college writers, high school writers, writers who own their own business, etc. Simple steps in each chapter break down the productivity practices of creatives, the organization needed to get to the finish line, and the purpose behind it all: drawing readers in with quality content and style. I discuss the intentional processes behind organizing ideas, conducting interviews, beating writer's block, networking, editing, and publishing. Whether you're an old hand at writing, a novice, or a college professor aspiring to write full-time, this book is for you.

2. AquaNotes®

Talk about an inexpensive holiday gift idea every writer would love. This is a waterproof notepad with suction cups for the shower wall and a waterproof pencil. I swear by them, and every writer should have one. They will never lose another great idea.

3. The Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook

As I wrote in my book, "Stylebooks and style manuals are tremendous resources for those of us who spend our days trying to figure out the English language." Most writers have these handy already. But if you know someone who doesn't, this sure would make for an excellent holiday gift. The Chicago Manual of Style is for editors, authors, and book publishers. The AP Stylebook is for newspaper writers and editors and public relations professionals.

4. Lap Desk

As I also said in my book, "Obviously, you want to use a desk or table to write your best stuff, but sometimes writers find themselves typing away on the couch, in bed, or while on a long car ride. Lap desks are great for making these situations a bit more comfortable. I got mine from Best Buy a few years ago, and it has really come in handy during long car rides or if I want to switch up my surroundings." You can click on the image to learn more.

5. Noise Canceling Headphones

The "noise canceling" or "noise isolating" part is a stretch depending on your surroundings, but these headphones are a great tool for minimizing distractions and improving concentration.

6. Grammarly

One of many holiday gift ideas for the writer in your family is a subscription to Grammarly. There is a free version of this online grammar checker, but the upgraded subscription is well worth the yearly fee. Grammarly doesn't just correct basic spelling mistakes. It also improves your writing style and picks up on improper word placement and various other things you might never catch on your own. It can be installed on any computer as well as on your phone.

7. A Writer's Block

I didn't even know this existed until I started searching the Internet. This is a fun gift that your favorite writer can use as a paperweight or for show on their desk.

8. Adjustable seat cushions

Writing-induced backaches are no fun, especially when your favorite writer goes to stand up after several hours in front of the computer. These can be used with an office chair or while reading and writing on the living room sofa.

9. Varidesk Laptop 30™

If you really want to go all-out and get your favorite writer something nice, how about a compact standing desk? A few years ago, I bought myself a simple laptop version, and it has worked out perfectly. Granted, this isn't a necessity by any means. But it's a luxury that I've found has improved my posture and helps me keep plugging along when I'm tired of sitting.

There are so many great holiday gift ideas for the writer in your family, including:

* Signing them up for a writing course

* Buying them a few books about writing

* Clever coffee mugs

* Fingerless writing gloves

* General office and desk supplies

* Notebooks
