Did y'all know September is National Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month? As much as I champion literacy and the written word every day as your friendly neighborhood writer and editor, you'd think I'd be aware of this magnificent observance.

Not only that, but this is also National Literacy Month. And last Saturday was National Read a Book Day! I did know that, though.

While I'm calling myself out for being partially oblivious, the real message here is that writers and editors of all experience levels and professional pursuits are awesome! If you know one, work with one, hired one, or have a friend who knows one, thank them for making the world a more interesting place through their creative efforts.

National Literacy Month Is a Big Deal!

As I stated in my newsletter this past weekend, National Literacy Month originated from the 1960s work of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its initiatives aimed at improving literacy skills. On July 25, 1991, President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act into law, which provided federal funds to support reading skill programs for children and adults. In September 2024, Congress passed a resolution declaring September as National Literacy Month (S.Res.814).

The goal is to raise awareness about the benefits of reading and writing for both personal and societal well-being and encourage the act of reading. For instance, WordsRated, an international research data and analytics group, states that reading for pleasure has a greater impact on a child’s cognitive development than their parents’ educational level. Also, adults who read for 30 minutes a week report 20% greater life satisfaction.

I hope you’ll spend some time reflecting on the power of the written word.

Thanks for reading!
