Welcome to another Edit This® grammar lesson. Today's topic is: Gorilla vs. Guerrilla. Do you know the difference between them?

Most people reading this might respond with a resounding "YES!" However, these are commonly confused words that can sound the same in everyday speech but have completely different meanings and spellings.

Let's clear up any lingering confusion, shall we?

Gorilla has several meanings, but it's mainly used when referring to the actual animal, which is known as the world's largest primate.

  • The angry gorilla paced inside its cage.

  • Mike entered the store like a gorilla, demanding help and knocking things over.

  • The mama gorilla held her baby tight.

Guerrilla is used to describe a member of a small independent fighting force that uses irregular tactics such as sabotage, ambushes, raids, and hit-and-run attacks.

  • The soldiers resorted to guerrilla tactics to win the skirmish.

  • They are members of a guerrilla movement.

  • We will use guerrilla warfare to our advantage.
