At Edit This, Your Story Is More Than Just Words on a Page

There are moments in this line of work that remind me that my job as a writer goes way beyond simply putting words on a page.
Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of helping a remarkable man named Norm Isaacs tell the story of his extraordinary life. Like so many people, Norm didn’t think his story was overly spectacular. After being begged by countless family and friends to write a book, he gave me a chance to preserve his life and legacy in the form of an autobiography.
When he held the unpublished manuscript in his hands for the first time, he was as giddy as a kid in a candy store. It melted my heart to see him react as he did, and watching someone realize the value of their own story is one of the greatest gifts this career has given me.
Sadly, Norm recently passed away.
His family is certainly grieving this loss. I, too, have shed more tears than I can describe in this blog post. And yet, I’m grateful for the time I spent with Norm, and that we finished what we set out to do.
I am also beyond thankful that his family has something tangible that captures his voice, wisdom, trademark humor, and, more importantly, his legacy.
It’s a sobering reminder that stories outlive us.
His passing has also reminded me of something I never want to take for granted: the incredible trust my clients place in me and the rest of my team at Edit This®. Inviting someone into your life, memories, triumphs, setbacks, regrets, and your most personal moments is no small thing. Those conversations become friendships, and those projects become much more than words on a page.
Every person I work with leaves an imprint on me. I considered Norm to be a friend, and it absolutely guts me to know that he’s gone. I take solace in the fact that Norm is now with God (or as he would say, the Big Guy), and I’m honored to have helped create a way for him to live on through his family and friends.
Here's a link to his book if you want to get to know Norm as I did.
If you’ve ever shared a story with me or any of my team, thank you.
And to Captain Norm, Rest in Peace. You are deeply missed.
