I love seeing company websites that have fun and engaging employee bios on an About Us, Meet The Team, or Our Team page. While not a do-or-die element, these are some of my favorite pages to read. And the fact that they took the time to include them shows how much the owners value building connections between their staff and potential clients.
Visitors click on those pages more often than you think. Employee bios give your site a sense of trust, personalization, and completeness.
Here are five reasons why having employee bios takes your website to another level.
1. They show off your team and their accomplishments
Whether you're a one-person show like me, or you have a solid 5-10 employees, everyone brings something important to the table. Employee bios are a great way to showcase that – and potential clients will want to know. A perfect example is Nelson Law Group PC. They have a page dedicated to their staff, complete with matching outfits and a clickable link under each photo that takes you to that person's bio.
2. Bios show employee/company personality
Humans like to see familiar or smiling faces and develop connections. We want to feel like we know, like, and trust someone. Who knows, a visitor to your site may have something in common with you or someone on your team, and that tidbit alone might be what pushes them to do business with you. STRIKE Performance has a Coaches page where they have done an excellent job pointing out that many of these guys are former professional baseball players. More importantly, they incorporated info about their personal lives, hobbies, etc. The ML Group did something very similar that oozes positive vibes.
3. Real people are working for you
There is something to be said for being able to click on a website, go to the About Us page, and see real people working there. No stock images, no directory listings. Just real people. Employee bios legitimize your company and give potential clients confidence. Check out EBR Consulting's bio page. I don't know about you, but this makes me want to call them now.
4. Bios increase website visits/traffic
I've always believed that the more you can offer on a website, the more likely it will be that people will find your company in search results. More importantly, they will "click around" and stay a lot longer. As a business owner, you don't want people to click on your site and then leave two seconds later. You want to give them a reason to stick around, and employee bios are guaranteed to do that for you.
5. They help visitors find the right person to work with
Employee bios that have details such as an employee's title, what they do for the company, their contact information, etc., point visitors to where they need to go faster. Maybe the owner is exactly who they need to speak to, or maybe it's Brenda in accounting or John in client relations.
How do I make my employee bios look better?
There are a few hard-and-fast rules that I think every employee bios page should follow.
Have a photo for every employee.
Personalize them (Include hobbies, fun facts, etc.).
Keep your employee bios updated.
Make them consistent in length.
Don't be afraid to make your bios look different.
Hire a writer to do them for you.
The example links above are from businesses that worked with Edit This® to either create employee bios from scratch or improve upon what they already had. I think every one of them is a tangible representation of how having employee bios can help take your website to another level.
As for our role in the process, we visited each employee and interviewed them. We got to know that employee and went beyond the resumes and accolades (though we included those things, too) to craft bios that really stand out and showcase each employee or partner's individuality.
