Welcome to another Edit This® grammar lesson. Today's topic is: Serial vs. Cereal.
Do you know the difference between them?
Most people reading this might respond with a resounding "YES!" However, these are examples of homophones—words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. And they confuse more people than you might think.
Let's clear up any lingering confusion, shall we?
Serial has several meanings. It can describe something broadcast or published in a series, or any medium released in successive parts, often without a clearly defined endpoint. The term can also refer to actions or events that occur repeatedly over time, such as serial killers.
The serial killer eluded police for 10 years.
I consider myself a serial entrepreneur.
We published the novel as a serial in monthly installments.
Cereal refers to plants in the grass family that produce edible grains, the grains themselves, or foods made from those grains—like breakfast cereal. Grocery stores have entire aisles dedicated to breakfast cereals, which can be made from wheat, corn, rice, or oats.
Buy me the healthiest cereal in the store.
My grandpa grew cereal crops like wheat and corn.
I always eat cereal for breakfast.
