Welcome to another Edit This® grammar lesson. Today's topic is: Rung vs. Wrung.

Do you know the difference between them?

Most people reading this might respond with a resounding "YES!" However, these are examples of homophones—words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. And they confuse more people than you might think.

Let's clear up any lingering confusion, shall we?

Rung has several meanings. It is the past participle of the verb ring, but it can also refer to the crosspieces of a ladder, the spoke of a wheel, or a stage in a level of hierarchy.

  • The bell for class has rung.

  • The contractor stood on the top rung of the ladder.

  • Jen got her bell rung when she fell off the bike.

Wrung means to twist or compress, twist forcibly, or to extract or get by forceful means.

  • He wrung his opponent's arm to win the match.

  • She wrung the water out of the towel.

  • The bad news wrung every bit of hope out of him.
