Edit This Grammar Lesson: Is It Could or Couldn't Care Less?

I have a friend who insists he’s always right. Even when he’s clearly wrong, he’ll debate an issue into the ground just to save a little face. Case in point: a recent argument we had over whether it’s could care less or couldn’t care less. He argued passionately for the former, even though he was literally debating the point with a professional writer and editor.
He wasn't going to win this argument—not this time. After all, if you could care less, that means you still care. And the entire point of the phrase is that you don’t.
Not even a little bit.
Somewhere, I know he's still out there muttering to himself that I didn't get the better of him. But we all know I did! He just couldn’t care less about admitting it.
Could vs. Couldn't Care Less: Why You Should Care!
"I couldn't care less" and "I could care less" are so similar that many people assume they can be used interchangeably when conveying that someone doesn't care about something. I get it. I really do. But if you look closely, only one fits the intended meaning.
I couldn't care less literally means your level of caring has already hit rock bottom.
Zero.
Empty tank.
Nothing left in reserve.
You care so little that caring any less would require negative emotions and possibly a scientific breakthrough.
I couldn't care less about this horrible movie.
Jackson couldn't care less about your feelings.
Conversely, saying, "I could care less" leaves a sliver of hope that maybe ... just maybe ... you still care a little bit. In other words, there are other things that you actually care less about.
You're not utterly indifferent—at least not yet.
And that's totally fine ... if that's what you mean.
The problem is that most people use this figure of speech to announce total indifference.
So, in the Phrase, "I Couldn't Care Less" ...
Using couldn't is correct because you're trying to say that your level of care for the situation is zero. It can't be any lower. If you wrote or said “I could care less,” you’d be saying (or writing) that you have at least a little room in your heart to care.
This is what I was trying to get across to my friend, and I couldn't care less about whether or not he still thinks he's correct. :)
